Price increases, inflation, the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East – the year 2023 was marked by crises. But especially at Christmas there is a great longing for silence, peace and quiet. Like ordinary citizens, Austria’s top politicians are also taking a break from the many global political tragedies – and celebrating in a rather modest way and with their immediate families.
Shortly after 5 p.m., Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen posted a Christmas message in which he verbally expressed his confidence.
“Despite all the challenges, I am convinced that we can and will develop the world for the better,” he affirms, before wishing all citizens “Merry Christmas”.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer posts a photo from his living room decorated with a beautiful Christmas tree. The table is set for eight people and the Chancellor stands in front of a large window – with an ‘optimistic view of the future’, as he says.
“Overcoming crises with solidarity and courage”
“During the Christmas period we have the opportunity to gain energy for the coming year together with family and friends. The experiences of recent years show that we can overcome crises through solidarity, courage and trust. Now is the time to look to the future with optimism. I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas!”, the Chancellor said.
NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger doesn’t show much of her four walls or Christmas decorations, but shines with striking earrings. “MERRY CHRISTMAS! I hope that if you celebrate today, you spend the day with your loved ones!”, she captioned her photo.
Kickl in front of a traditionally decorated Christmas tree
Herbert Kickl, chairman of the federal party of the FPÖ, chose a sophisticated setting for his Christmas video (see below): he sits in a somewhat dimly lit library, the four candles of the Advent wreath are lit and in the background is a traditionally decorated Christmas tree.
Kickl: “I want to give you hope!”
Kickl writes as a Christmas angel: “Dear friends! Unfortunately, the year 2023 was also marked by crises, threats, stress and worries. It’s time for real change and transformation. Our solidarity has never been more important than now. “Especially in these challenging and difficult times, I want to give you all a lot of hope and confidence for Christmas,” said Kickl.
“Provide justice, security, peace and freedom”
And further: “If we stay together next year, we can ensure the urgently needed new beginning in our country in the sense of justice, security, peace and freedom. I wish you and your loved ones a Merry and Blessed Christmas with all my heart!”
Hofer: “Waiting for presents”
National Councilor Norbert Hofer agrees on Instagram: “Christmas greetings from Pinkafeld. There are already two people waiting for the presents,” he writes – and posts photos of the dog and cat.
Raab with family after a fundraising gala
Minister for Women and Families Susanne Raab was on the phone in the morning during the ‘Light in the Dark’ fundraising gala (see below) before waiting ‘for the Christ Child’ with her child (see below).
State Secretary for Youth and Voluntary Work, Claudia Plakolm, is also taking a relaxed approach to the celebration: “Christmas – a great opportunity to make music again (while others provide the sausages),” she writes about a snapshot during the Christmas holidays. furnished living room (see below).
Martin Polaschek, Federal Minister of Education, wishes his followers: “Merry Christmas and happy holidays! May the holidays bring much joy, peace and inspiration!”
