A German hiker climbed the Sonntagshorn between Ruhpolding and Unken in shorts on Thursday evening. The cooling caused by the thunderstorms caused problems for the man (42). Because he was freezing cold, he was brought to safety unharmed by the mountain rescue team.
On the Sonntagshorn (1,961 meters) in the Chiemgau Alps, mountain rescuers rescued a 42-year-old German man on Thursday evening. The man had climbed the exposed western ridge and had used flashlights to draw attention to himself. A tourist noticed the signs and called the emergency services around 11 p.m. It turned out that the man was driving without a headlight. The light from his mobile phone was not enough to see the marked path.
Man not injured
Two mountain rescuers from Unken (Pinzgau) climbed to the man and were able to make contact with him about 50 meters below the summit. The 42-year-old was sitting in a rock niche, freezing cold in his shorts. After a thunderstorm it had cooled down considerably and there was extremely strong wind on the mountain ridge. But the man was not injured; he descended into the valley with the two helpers.
The German had previously made an emergency call on his mobile phone. This first reached the fire brigade in Bavaria, who informed the state warning centre in Salzburg, which in turn passed the information on to the mountain rescue service via the Red Cross control centre. “At that point, however, the hiker had already been rescued from the ridge,” the mountain rescue team said.
