Salzburg is now investigating the introduction of its own nursing staff for support. All parties in the state parliament supported a corresponding motion by the SPÖ on Wednesday. The so-called “school nurses” are also needed because there are so many school doctors missing.
Like more and more communities, Faistenau no longer has a school doctor. On Thursday morning, an emergency solution was decided: the children from the sports focus group will take the bus to Hof for class. A general practitioner carries out the mandatory sports medical examinations there.
There is a major shortage in the country
In many places in Salzburg, especially in the countryside, there are no longer annual displays for children at school. “It would be bad if parents overlooked an illness,” says a school involved. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find school doctors. “Apparently the positions are not attractive,” complains a local boss. The state is now looking for doctors for 54 primary, middle and polytechnic schools.
State Council: “A set screw”
To address the shortage, the state government now wants to investigate a pilot project in Vienna. There, nurses work as ‘school nurses’ to care for the health of the children. They provide health education and assistance in acute cases. All five parties voted in the state parliament on Wednesday in favor of the SPÖ proposal to review the implementation of a pilot project in Salzburg. The responsible ÖVP regional councilor Daniela Gutschi says: “School nurses are a possible adjustment screw that can combat the shortage of school doctors.”
