Five penguin counters sought in Antarctica

Date:

Five people are currently wanted for a post office and store on Goudier Island in Antarctica. In addition, penguins must be counted every day for five months. Applications must be submitted to the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) before 26 March.

The new employees must be resilient, healthy and environmentally conscious, according to the charity. For months there is only snow and ice to be seen and no internet or running water on the island, which is some 14,500 kilometers from Britain. Goudier Island is rocky and a breeding ground for gentoo penguins. In addition, it has a small Antarctic station whose buildings were restored in 1996 and is a destination for cruise ship tourism.

“Opportunity Like No Other”
About 80,000 postcards are sent from there every year. There is also a souvenir shop and a small museum. The jobs on Goudier Island are incredibly popular, said UKAHT boss Camilla Nichol. “We are thrilled to provide an opportunity like no other to live amidst a landscape that awes and amazes.” The vacancies are expected to be filled from November 2023 to March 2024, the Antarctic summer. At this point, temperatures average just above freezing.

A year ago, the UKATH received a record number of applications. An all-female team was on duty and had to call for help at the start of the stay. The roof of the building, which houses the post office, souvenir shop and museum, was damaged by a three to four meter thick layer of snow. At least the snow kept you from smelling the stench of penguin poop, a naval officer joked.
