Little Mya is not spending this special day – her first birthday – with her family, but in the hospital. The baby suffers serious consequences from a shocking trauma – at the hands of his mother. She is now on trial in Vienna for the attempted murder of her daughter and cannot hold back the tears.
On the first day of the trial, Mya turned exactly one year old. “It’s just lucky that she celebrates her first birthday today,” explains the prosecutor. And by the prompt medical attention and treatment of the shocking trauma – that her mother of all people inflicted on her.
Shake vigorously at least twice
In tears, the young mother is led into the courtroom in Vienna. The 29-year-old cries throughout the prosecution’s presentation. The prosecutor accuses her of attempting to murder her own baby: “She was completely overwhelmed. This led to the incident. She grabbed Mya’s armpits and shook her for several seconds.” – at least twice in July 2022.
“Mya suffered life-threatening injuries from this shaking,” the prosecutor said. It wasn’t until 1 a.m. that the little one’s parents noticed that she was very stiff and that her pupils were fully dilated. They immediately called an ambulance. “As things stand now, the girl will never be able to lead a normal life. She will remain disabled forever,” the prosecutor concludes in her opening speech with a terrible prognosis for the future.
The medical report says: ‘Mya is seriously damaged’
The then four-month-old child suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, retinal hemorrhage and brain tissue damage – all signs of shock trauma, according to forensic physician Nikolaus Klupp. And demonstrates on a baby CPR doll how violently the defendant had to shake Mya. Which, of course, caused horror on the faces of the judges. “The shaking trauma is diabolical. There are usually no external injuries,” Klupp explains the danger of such a condition.
It was only a month after the baby was hospitalized that it could be transferred from the intensive care unit to the normal ward. According to the coroner, the damage continues: it is questionable whether Mya will ever be able to eat solid food. Her mental development is at the level of a six-month-old child. It may even be that the girl will never be able to walk without help.
“I Didn’t Want To Kill My Child”
The accused mother just sobbed: “I didn’t want to kill my child. I was devastated and she wouldn’t stop screaming.” The suspect took care of the children, the household and the financial income on her own, but her partner did not help much.
In addition, both her son (5) and daughter Mya suffer from a previous illness – both were premature babies. The girl has a blood disorder, which means she has to go to the hospital regularly. “As soon as she got home, she got the wooden spoon, the broom and her son at the same time,” defender Nikolaus Rast describes the completely overcrowded daily life of the 29-year-old. He speaks out clearly against intent to murder. After all, she would have started the rescue chain: “No one who wants to kill a child does.”
“Actually a Good Mother”
But how can someone do such a thing? “What we see here is a development towards a deep overstrain,” describes psychiatrist Peter Hofmann. The mother would never have received help, appearances wanted out. Nevertheless, Hofmann says in the trial, “I assume she’s basically a good mother.” She is neither dangerous nor irresponsible – just hopelessly overwhelmed.
Which the prosecutor aptly summed up: “One may be overwhelmed, but not shaken!” On March 16, the verdict was passed in the trial against the accused mother.
