On the Internet – The US government wants to make it more difficult to buy firearms

Date:

The US government wants to make it more difficult to buy firearms at fairs and over the internet. In the future, all potential customers will have to be checked, Vice President Kamala Harris said Thursday. So far this is only the case in stores.

According to Harris, tens of thousands of firearms are sold every year without inspection. This means that the weapons are sold without licenses and without background checks on the buyers. “If you sell guns primarily to make a profit, you must obtain a permit and conduct background checks,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said of the new rule.

The new law closes the “gun loophole” that allowed violent criminals to obtain guns, the vice president said. However, restricting private gun ownership is not a major reform. Stronger measures have failed in the US for decades due to resistance from the powerful gun lobby and its Republican allies.

Will there be a legal challenge?
“All of President Joe Biden’s major steps to reduce gun violence have been called into question,” the White House said. Therefore, the new initiative could also be tried out.

Gun violence is an everyday problem in the US. There are more firearms in the country than there are inhabitants. Last year, more than 40,000 people died as a result.
