All public transport in the province of Salzburg can be used for free at Petrol Fridays. You don’t need a ticket for that either. In the early Friday afternoon, however, travelers were in for an unpleasant surprise. Anyone who wanted to take the Eurocity from Salzburg in the direction of Pongau and did not have a ticket had to get off again. As has been the case several times recently, the announcement pointed to overcrowding.
This irritates not only travelers, but also the province of Salzburg. After all, the country pays for the citizens’ free rides. There is already contact with the ÖBB. “Should that have been the case, then in our view it cannot be the case that there is a distinction between the customers”, says the office of Transport Alderman Stefan Schnöll. The incident is also taken into account when invoicing. “We expect that nothing like this will happen again.”
“There was an overcrowding”
Because many had to leave the train at the central station, there was also a delay in the departure time, one traveler described. The situation is different for ÖBB: “There was an overcrowding situation and therefore all customers without reservation were asked to leave the train as it would not have been possible to continue their journey safely. This also had consequences for the users of the petrol-free days, but not only for them. We make no distinction there. We regret the incident, but unfortunately it sometimes happens,” said a company spokesperson.
