A year after the attacks – violence in front of the stadium: Graz hooligans investigated

Date:

More than a year after scenes of violence against the police on the sidelines of a Europa League match in Sturm Graz, three suspects have now been identified. For the police, this shows how consistently they act against violent crimes at football matches.

The incidents took place on the 2023 national holiday on the forecourt of the stadium in Liebenau. Sturm met Atalanta Bergamo at home, the team from Graz eventually fought to a 2-2 draw against the Italians. The points win was overshadowed by riots and acts of violence against several police officers in front of the stadium.

Police officer seriously injured in the head
The reason was a police cordon to separate the fan groups, which caused some supporters to become aggressive. They used projectiles, banned fireworks and resisted the police. An officer was hit in the head by an unknown object and was seriously injured despite wearing a protective helmet.

Trio from Graz and surroundings
Now, more than a year later, after “extensive and tireless investigation,” as stated in a press release, police have found three suspects. The men are 28 to 38 years old and live in the Graz districts and the Graz region.

They have already been questioned about the incidents and have partially confessed to charges of resisting state authority and grievous bodily harm. Now the trio must undergo criminal proceedings and an official stadium ban is also in the pipeline.
