Deadly drama in St. Leonhard in the Tyrolean Pitztal on Saturday! A mountaineering duo from Germany – two men aged 40 and 66 – wanted to climb the top of the Verpeilspitz. During the early descent, the 40-year-old slipped on a snowfield and fell into the depths.
The tragedy took place around 2:30 p.m. The German duo made a mountain tour in St. Leonhard in the Pitztal to the Verpeilspitz summit on the Kaunergrat. “They left Plangeross in the morning hours and followed the signposted route,” police said.
The tour was canceled early, but then drama happened
Due to the advanced time, the alpinists later decided to stop the tour and started the descent. “The 66-year-old was walking behind the 40-year-old and saw him suddenly lose his balance on a snow field.” As a result, the 40-year-old fell over steep terrain full of rocks.
Police helicopter has recovered body
“The companion immediately made an emergency call. He was rescued shortly afterwards by the Martin 8 emergency medical helicopter.” However, all help came too late for the 40-year-old from Munich. He was fatally injured in the crash. The police helicopter brought the body to the valley.
