“I have nothing to say” – The Iranian activist sewed his lips shut

Date:

An Iranian human rights activist sewed his lips shut in protest. “Maybe it’s food for thought,” Hossein Ronaghi wrote on the X platform alongside a photo of him with blue lips sewn shut. He has nothing to say against the dictatorship and tyranny in his country.

It is not the time for words, but for actions, Hossein Ronaghi (39) wrote on stage I will not leave Iran.”

In the accompanying video on the X platform, the activist speaks, among other things, about the oppression of women and the imprisonment and execution of political opponents in his country. No one should be jailed for expressing his or her opinion. Protesting is the right of every citizen.

Here you can see Hossein Ronaghi’s post.

Iranians should not be indifferent
Nevertheless, he loves Iran and its people ‘with all his heart’, and he will resist and fight with his soul. The Iranians should not be indifferent either. “Don’t think you’re safe if you put your head down and only care about your own life.” Ronaghi wrote that he hopes that one day the people will wake up and overcome slavery.

A few hours later, he posted a photo of himself with blue, stitched lips and a serious, thoughtful expression. In the comment section, some users expressed their concerns and advised the activist to take care of himself and not forget that his life is valuable. Others question the protest and demand evidence, such as a video of the sewing.

Ronaghi is considered one of the country’s most influential critics. The 39-year-old has been to prison several times for his political beliefs. During the nationwide wave of protests in 2022, he was jailed again and began a hunger strike. Ronaghi is accused of, among other things, ‘spreading anti-system propaganda’, ‘insulting the religious leader and the president’ and membership of an illegal computer group. He claims he was tortured during his captivity and denied necessary medical treatment.

Many other Iranian human rights activists have now left the country. Just on Wednesday, activist Kianush Sanjari took his own life in Tehran.
