The climate crisis is an important topic for a large majority of Austrians. However, given the war in Europe and rising costs, the mood is generally in the basement. According to a new study, only 42 percent of those surveyed are optimistic about the future – this equates to a drop of 26 percent from 2020. Trust in politics has also declined “alarmingly”.
74 percent of those surveyed for the “Climate Study 2022” of the market research institute Integral on behalf of Greenpeace and the ORF initiative “Mother Earth” indicated that the climate is an important theme. 86 percent supported measures against the crisis. All in all, the theme is “is here to stay”.
Although only about 50 percent felt directly threatened by the climate crisis, the outlook was still bleak. 90 percent of those surveyed expected extreme weather events to continue to increase. 64 percent even thought that desertification in the Mediterranean was possible. More than two-thirds also doubt whether politicians will take the necessary measures in time to counter this.
Climate-friendly measures are widely supported
Three out of five respondents were in favor of mandatory energy-saving measures. Two-thirds supported restructuring the tax system so that climate-friendly behavior is rewarded. Only four percent would voluntarily opt for a new gas heating system. On the other hand, the majority welcomed the expansion of photovoltaic and wind energy systems by 91 and 81 percent respectively.
Another finding of the survey: While personal interest in climate issues is generally high, many people feel under-informed. 58 percent indicated that they do not know which successful measures to protect the climate are being taken in Austria. 65 percent did not know the financial consequences if Austria continues to miss the international climate targets.
