“Our ‘Linz ist Linz’ video did not go down well with some people last year. We’ve listened to your feedback and are excited to launch a new campaign today. What awaits you? Lots of singing and sunshine, because our Linz is super beautiful!” write the tourism experts at @vistitlinz on Facebook. Is Linz actually starting a kitsch campaign after the controversial “Linz is ugly” video? Check here if this is really the case!
“That sounds promising. I’m already looking forward to the result!” wrote “Maria Krone” on the visitlinz Facebook page. “Well, I just love last year’s video! Very original and creative! I thought it was perfect !” says the “Linzer Biene”. User Karl Hiesberger is reminiscent of propaganda motifs from earlier times: “The photo is reminiscent of images of the BDM. It is certainly not intended that way, but please compare.” To which the VVV Linz replied: “Our happy model comes from the Sound of Music film. You know the opening scene where he dances across the meadows?”
A call to the director of tourism
Some Facebook users are already wondering what this kitsch motif posted in early April could be. Just to be sure, we call the director of tourism in Linz, Georg Steiner, who is currently taking a cure but is picking up his cell phone. “Mr. Steiner, this photo is based on the Sound of Music pattern, which is…”
What Georg Steiner says about it
When we asked the director of tourism in Linz about it, he burst out laughing: “Yes, yes, that’s an April Fool’s Day joke!” However, he finds it interesting how many people are actually “humorless” and have taken the Facebook post seriously, completely worrying this apparent U-turn in the advertising line. Who thought of that? “My employees are very creative,” says Steiner full of praise. “I’m really proud of them because they’re really in a good mood.”
How does city boss Luger react?
Unlike the communications department of the city of Linz, where an April Fool’s joke with a “vegan Urfahranermarkt” did not go down well with mayor Klaus Luger, tourism director Steiner has not yet received any reprimands from the city manager. With the film “Linz is ugly” it was completely different, there was quite a bit of trouble.
Are there any new advertising ideas?
But seriously: doesn’t Steiner want to continue this “Sound of Music” idea after some positive reactions? “Sound of Music 2” so to speak? says Steiner mysteriously. “Of course we already have something in the pipeline for this year. We’re working on something. But that goes elsewhere.” But the April 1 joke now fits quite well, “because it strengthens our positioning. Because everyone knows what is not meant.” There are still people who think that clichés would work. But that is not the case. Steiner: “You just have to admit that it can be done differently.”
