An Italian Navy frigate captain arrested in 2021 for spying for Russia has been sentenced to 29 years in prison by the Supreme Court in Rome – the sentence is final.
The Supreme Court, the ultimate authority in the Italian legal system, found it proven that the captain handed over confidential NATO documents to a Russian diplomat and received 5,000 euros for this. At first instance, he was sentenced to twenty years in prison last January.
“Secret meeting” in the parking lot
Two Russian diplomats were expelled from Italy in 2021 due to the espionage affair. The case had caused tensions between Italy and Moscow.
The frigate captain appeared in a parking lot in Rome in March 2021 for a “secret meeting” with a Russian officer working at the embassy.
The man was arrested when he was about to hand over the documents to the Russian. He has been imprisoned in Rome ever since.
