Retired couple dead – shot in Lower Austria: long suicide due to illness

Date:

After the death of two pensioners on Wednesday in Matzendorf-Hölles (Wiener Neustadt district), the investigation continues at full speed on Thursday. According to the latest findings, the 74-year-old may have shot the 77-year-old first and then committed suicide. The possible motive for the crime: the two were sick.

A prolonged suicide out of desperation is considered increasingly likely on Thursday morning. The 74-year-old is said to have first shot the 77-year-old with a small caliber rifle and then committed suicide.

Autopsy ordered
“A possible motive for the crime could be that the two were ill,” explains police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner. The Wiener Neustadt Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered autopsies. A shooting hand determination was also planned.

Woman died in hospital
The two pensioners died on Wednesday after being shot in Matzendorf-Hölles (Wiener Neustadt district). The crime probably took place between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. The two were found with gunshot wounds in a residential building, Stefan Pfandler, head of the State Criminal Investigation Department of Lower Austria, confirmed on Wednesday evening. “The man died on the spot and the woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Wednesday evening,” he said.

Pensioner legally owned a gun
The 74-year-old and the woman, who was three years older than him, both lived in the home. According to police, it was not immediately clear whether it was a couple. The Lower Austrian State Police took over the investigation. The work at the crime scene was completed on Thursday morning. “The weapon was confiscated,” Schwaigerlehner reported. The man legally owned the gun. “Environmental investigations are underway to investigate possible background issues,” the spokesperson said. Track evaluations were also underway.
