Absurd case – son (11) went shopping alone – mother arrested

Date:

A mother in the US state of Georgia faces jail time for allowing her 11-year-old son to go into town alone to buy something. The route was less than a kilometer long. The police picked up the boy and took him home. His mother, Brittany Patterson, is charged with reckless endangerment.

The case took place on October 30. Patterson had taken one of her other children to the doctor. Meanwhile, eleven-year-old Soren decided to walk into town for shopping. Actually an innocent thing, but the police saw that the child’s well-being was endangered by this short walk alone.

Mother: “It was a short trip”
A concerned citizen saw the child and called authorities. The police arrived and took Soren home. Five hours later, officers returned to Patterson’s home to arrest the mother. The 42-year-old cannot understand the reaction: “He knows how to get home. It was a short trip and I wasn’t worried,” she told American media.

According to the arrest warrant, the mother “intentionally and knowingly endangered the physical safety of her minor son,” police said. Even Patterson’s attorney can’t understand the reasoning. “Our criminal justice system is based on someone doing something or being negligent. “What exactly did she do?” asks David DeLuga.

Mother has to keep an eye on son with GPS tracker
The police eventually offered the mother to drop the charges. To do this, she should have made sure to equip her son with a GPS tracker. Patterson refused. She argues, “I couldn’t sign that because that would be an admission that my home or my parenting choices were unsafe. And I just don’t believe that.”

The woman had to post a bond to avoid being arrested. She faces a year in prison if the prosecutor actually files charges for negligent conduct. However, the 41-year-old is convinced: “I did nothing wrong.”
