Dramatic rescue operation after an alpine accident in Upper Austria: A mountaineer from Lower Austria fell about 15 meters on Friday afternoon while descending the High Cross into the Dead Mountains and was seriously injured.
In the so-called Arzlochscharte at about 2100 meters above sea level, a boulder broke out, on which the alpinist lost her balance and fell over two ledges. The 53-year-old is said to have suffered a traumatic brain injury and a shoulder injury, the mountain rescue team said.
Rope recovery not possible
Her companion alerted the emergency services. Since the rescue helicopter was unable to save the rope due to the weather, mountain rescuers and an emergency doctor were flown as close as possible to the accident site, from where they climbed to the injured person.
After the emergency, the helpers carried the Lower Austrian to a location where the helicopter could pick them up and fly them to the Kirchdorf hospital. The rescuers then descended into the valley via the Welser Hütte, arriving shortly after 10 p.m., about four and a half hours after the alarm was sounded.
