Lives of dairy farmers – “The 38-hour week ends for us on Wednesday”

Leutschach in southern Styria is known for its wine culture: among the 174 wine growers, the Weiss couple and their dairy cows have an almost exotic status. A look behind the stable doors of a family whose 38-hour week ends on Wednesday afternoon.

Their names are “Beate”, “Alexa”, “Sunshine”, and they take a morning nap when we visit and look very contentedly in the big playpen. Of course, Karin and Herbert Weiss would also give them pasture, but that is one of the biggest challenges here in Fötschach near Leutschach: “There is no space.” pasture, “but it is only rented out and too small for our 50 cows”.
