On Friday evening, a freight train between Cologne and Aachen collided with a construction vehicle, derailing the locomotive and ten wagons. There are fears of serious consequences for train traffic.
As “Bild” reports, the driver of the freight train was unable to brake in time around 1:20 am when he saw the Deutsche Bahn construction vehicle on the track. According to the fire department, three people were injured in the accident and one victim suffered serious injuries.
It is still unknown what the freight train was carrying, but it is not believed that any hazardous substances have leaked. A possible danger to the environment could initially be ruled out.

Railway completely closed
The railway line between Cologne and Aachen was completely closed on Friday morning. All trains have to be diverted on a large scale and some connections have been canceled completely. A delay of approximately 90 minutes can be expected for ICE trains on the route.
After the accident, Deutsche Bahn tried to organize a replacement rail service to limit the inconvenience to travelers. It is unclear how long the route will be closed. In the morning, the emergency services were busy assessing the damage and determining the cause of the accident.
