“Only” 51st place – Vienna is no longer the unfriendliest city in the world

Last year it ranked last out of 53 international cities, but the Austrian capital now only comes in penultimate in terms of friendliness. The residents of Berlin (53rd) and Munich (52nd) are now rougher.

  • Social life: Expats do not feel welcome in Vienna and about a quarter (24 percent) are dissatisfied with the social life in the city. However, this is already an above-average result (29 percent worldwide) and a significant improvement compared to the previous year: there were 40 percent negative answers.
  • Language and payment: Criticism has been expressed that it is often not possible to pay with a debit or credit card in the Danube Metropolis. The language barrier can also be difficult for expats – that’s why Vienna ranks 36th here.
  • Rent: In contrast to the situation in many other capitals around the world, it was also perceived as positive that finding housing for expats in the federal capital is not a major problem (16th place in the ranking). The city is also doing well when it comes to housing affordability (10th place).
  • Income: After a brief dip to 16th place in 2023, Vienna returned to the top 10 of the Personal Finance Index in 2024 (10th place). Four in five expats (82 percent) agree that their disposable household income is enough to live a comfortable life, with half even saying it is more than enough.
  • Quality of life: The quality of life in Vienna remains top. Expats like the affordability (3rd) and availability (2nd) of public transport, the ability to travel (2nd) and both the urban (3rd) and natural (7th) environment. When it comes to recreational sports, Vienna actually ranks 9th. Vienna took third place with its commitment to the environment and climate.

In the overall rankings, the federal capital is the biggest gainer in the rankings, rising 21 places to 15th. Last year Vienna ranked 36th in the overall rankings.
