In Lower Austria alone, an average of eight approach and entry bans are imposed on men every day. A dense network of support services aims to help those affected escape abusive relationships.
Only recently have there been renewed violent deaths in Lower Austria: the victims are once again women. The fact that a murder is usually just the tip of the iceberg often remains hidden. The crime itself is usually preceded by years of abusive relationships. In acute cases, in addition to the violence protection centers, six women’s shelters are an important point of contact for those affected. So far this year, 204 women and 207 children have found protection and refuge here.
The occupancy rate shows how necessary the supply is: it has increased by 15 percent since 2016. This year alone, all places were filled three times. In return, the budget has been increased by 20 percent over the past three years. But this year, 3,713 people have already been cared for in the violence protection center in St. Pölten – in 2023 that figure was 3,653. To date, a total of 2,533 approach and entry bans have been issued – that’s eight per day, across the country alone.
“No woman is left alone when she seeks protection,” emphasizes State Councilor Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig. The support measures are as diverse as the violence itself: “There are offers of help, information brochures, posters and stickers, the round table has been regionalized and a special community package has been launched,” says State Councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister.
Colored symbol against violence against women
From November 25, everything will turn orange again: “16 days against violence against women” is intended to raise awareness again this year. Because the message is clear, and not just today: “There are always ways out of an abusive relationship,” says Königsberger-Ludwig.
