Now the sad certainty: the baby, who had been missing since Thursday, was found dead in a garbage bin on the hospital grounds of the Favoriten clinic. The young mother is under strong suspicion and has been temporarily arrested. She’s clearly in a state of psychological emergency. The baby was only ten days old.
A shocking twist in the case of the missing child from the Favoriten clinic in Vienna: the tragic discovery puts an end to the intensive search that had been going on since Thursday. According to the police, the 29-year-old mother is under strong suspicion of murder; she confessed to the crime. She was also the one who showed the garbage container in which the ten-day-old baby was located during the interrogation on Friday evening. The discovery was made around 10 a.m. on Friday morning.
The baby must have frozen to death
According to initial information, the mother probably wrapped her daughter in a plastic bag and a blanket and then placed her in a dumpster not far from the clinic. According to the first reports, it probably froze due to the winter temperatures. An autopsy has now been ordered to clarify the cause of death.
About two hours after the body was found, State Criminal Investigation Department investigators were still investigating. The location on Kundratstrasse in front of the Favoriten clinic was cordoned off for eleven car lengths. The officers of the Tulzer Homicide Squad continue the investigation at full speed.
The nurse noticed the disappearance
On Thursday, the initially suspected kidnapping of the child from the neonatal unit led to a major police operation. The baby disappeared from the neonatal unit shortly before noon. A nurse noticed this and raised the alarm. Then the police were alerted.
Police sniffer dogs were used during the intensive search. These hit a garbage bin near the clinic. However, further investigation revealed that the garbage collector had apparently already emptied the container. This led to an urgent search for the vehicle in question on MA 48 in the afternoon.
After a large-scale search throughout the city, the MA 48 vehicle in question was stopped and searched not far from the clinic. The girl could not be found. That first trail of the guide dogs was probably a false alarm.
The Vienna Health Association (WIGEV) pointed out on Thursday that there was no free access to the neonatal department. This was also why, from the beginning, the investigators’ suspicions focused on the immediate family environment and the possibility of kidnapping the baby was excluded.
