Every murder of a woman is one too many; There have already been 26 femicides in Austria this year. They were all victims of intimate partner violence. But who are the perpetrators? And how do you protect yourself and others against victims?
“It’s not women who should pay attention to how the world becomes safer for them; the focus should be more on the perpetrators,” says Martina Gabriel, head of the Carinthian Department for Women and Equality. As part of the UN’s ‘Orange the World’ campaign, buildings will be lit bright orange between November 25 and December 10 to raise awareness about violence against women. In Carinthia, the women’s section organizes numerous events in the context of the “16 days against violence against women and girls”.
“Because domestic violence is not a private matter,” says Margot Moser-Lechner of the Carinthian Center for Violence Protection, which has already advised 1,235 victims this year and has been involved in 833 removals of violent criminals: “Everyone must watch and help. Many victims are still afraid to admit what is happening behind the ideal world facade in their home.”
