Autopsy results to date – man died after Krampus flight: cause has been determined

Date:

The Metnitztaler (24), who went to sleep in his car on Sunday after a Krampus run in Althofen (Carinthia), died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The autopsy now confirms this.

The 24-year-old young farmer, who was to take over his parents’ farm in St. Salvator (St. Veit district), was present with friends at the traditional Krampus Run in Althofen on Sunday. He parked his car in the parking lot of a nearby supermarket.

After the parade there was a cheerful party in the Krampus disco. Christian N. was considered sensible – so he decided not to drive anymore and sleep in his car.

Parking heater as a source of danger
To avoid freezing in the car when the outside temperature was around zero degrees, he turned on his parking heater – which he had ordered on the internet days earlier and installed in his car himself on Saturday. The 24-year-old reclined the backrest and wrapped himself in a blanket – without realizing he wouldn’t wake up.

Exhaust fumes spread throughout the interior
The cause of death was determined five days after the accident. As researchers feared, the young farmer died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The autopsy now confirms this. Because the parking heater ran on fuel, it can be assumed “that the exhaust gases were not properly removed and therefore spread throughout the vehicle,” the researchers say. The car and the parking heater were seized for investigation.
