Five medics were killed in two Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese Ministry of Health condemned the attacks as a violation of international law. The Israeli army promised to investigate the matter.
One of the incidents is said to have taken place in the Jezzine district. The Lebanese Health Ministry said on Friday that three paramedics were killed and three others injured. According to Lebanese sources, an ambulance was also attacked south of the coastal city of Tyre, killing two paramedics.
The head of a university hospital was murdered in the northeast of the country. Ali Rakan Alam was in his home when the Israeli attack took place, the Health Ministry said. The continued attacks on health facilities and their employees constitute a war crime, the report said.
230 health workers died
The Israeli military said it is investigating the incidents. According to the WHO, around 230 health workers have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the Gaza war. Most have lost their lives since clashes between the Israeli army and the Shiite militia Hezbollah escalated in late September.
Meanwhile, five members of the Islamist Hamas were killed in an Israeli attack on a residential area in the northern Gaza Strip. The army announced on Friday that among them were two commanders involved in the October 7 massacre in Israel. They have murdered and kidnapped people in an Israeli town bordering the Gaza Strip. They are also said to have led the fighting in the northern Gaza Strip against Israel.
The southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital Beirut were again shaken by air strikes on Friday. Several explosions were heard. Residents were able to get to safety. They were asked to maintain a distance of 500 meters. These places are considered Hezbollah strongholds and are often targeted by Israeli attacks.
