Two ice climbers from Austria were hit by an avalanche on Saturday in the Ortler area near Sulden in South Tyrol. They fell over a 300 meter high cliff. One of the men died from his serious injuries, his colleague is out of danger.
The two had climbed to the Vertainspitze and were about 100 meters below the summit, the online medium “stol.it” reported. One of the two men was able to call 911 after briefly losing consciousness. The men were taken to Bolzano hospital in critical condition.
No cell phone reception, man driven downhill
The seriously injured man who woke up unconscious after the crash initially had no reception on his mobile phone. He then had to pull his companion, who was still unconscious, some way into the valley before he could alert the emergency services.
The unconscious man had to be resuscitated by rescuers who arrived by emergency helicopter with a low body temperature. His colleague also suffered from severe hypothermia. Ultimately, two helicopters and the Sulden mountain rescue service were deployed. There was no way to save one of the athletes – he succumbed to his injuries. His compatriot is now out of danger.
