Intensive investigation – sabotage of submarine cables: Finnish Coast Guard on site

Date:

A Finnish Coast Guard ship has arrived at the damaged location of the C-Lion1 submarine data cable between Germany and Finland. It supports Germany and Sweden in investigations into suspected sabotage of the communications infrastructure.

The ship “Turva” is providing assistance to the Swedish coast guard and supporting underwater research in the southern Baltic Sea, the Finnish coast guard said on Sunday. The German Federal Police ship “Bamberg” is also on site.

C-Lion1 and another cable running between Sweden and Lithuania were damaged at short intervals about a week ago. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius quickly spoke of sabotage. Swedish investigators are also investigating suspected sabotage.

German ship also on site
According to reports, a Chinese cargo ship named “Yi Peng 3” has become the focus of investigators. On its way from a Russian oil port, the ship is said to have sailed near the affected areas at the time of the damage. It is now anchored in the Kattegat between Denmark and Sweden.

It is still unclear whether the cargo ship was detained by the Danish Navy. The Danish Defense Command simply stated that they were present in the vicinity of the “Yi Peng 3”. The Swedish coast guard also confirmed this weekend that one of its ships was in the area. According to a ship radar website, the German ship “Bad Düben” was also on site.

According to security experts, everything points to the ‘Yi Peng 3’.
Officially, no specific accusations have been made against the “Yi Peng 3”. According to Danish security expert Jacob Kaarsbo, everything indicates that the Chinese ship is responsible for the damage. It came from a Russian port and slowed down where it was damaged, he said, according to Swedish news agency TT.

Kaarsbo continued that he assumes that the Danish authorities are considering participating. But he does not believe China is behind sabotage. It is more likely that Russia leased the ship.

Cables cross east of Gotland
C-Lion1 is a 1,173 kilometer long “information highway” on the ocean floor that connects Central Europe and data centers in Northern Europe. The cable was put into use in 2016. According to operating company Cinia, repair work should start on Monday at the latest. The work is expected to be completed by the end of November, the company said in a statement.

The Arelion communications cable between the Swedish island of Gotland and Lithuania was also damaged. This cable is said to be quite old and has experienced failures in the past, mostly related to transmission errors. This time, however, one of the suspicious things is that this cable and the C-Lion1 cross at a point east of Gotland.
