Following a knife attack on US police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of the death of African-American George Floyd, criminal proceedings for attempted murder have been launched against the accused prisoner. According to prosecutors, 52-year-old Chauvin stabbed 22 times.
Chauvin’s fellow inmate attacked the 47-year-old former police officer last week on so-called ‘Black Friday’. According to the complaint, he said he wanted to commemorate the “Black Lives Matter” movement, which is aimed at widespread police violence against black people in the US. In this case, the 52-year-old faces an additional twenty years in prison for attempted murder. He also allegedly stabbed another inmate more than twenty times.
The 52-year-old told prison guards he would have killed Chauvin if he had not been restrained, according to a court document. He planned the crime for about a month.
Chauvin’s condition is unknown
He later stated that he had no intention of killing. No information was provided on Chauvin’s condition after the attack.
