As Beirut trembles, Israel approves ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon

Date:

Israel’s security cabinet has approved a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that he would present the draft agreement to the entire cabinet. Beirut has been heavily bombed in recent hours.

The agreement is expected to enter into force on Wednesday. The Israeli television channel Channel 12 reported this on Tuesday. The conflict with the Hezbollah militia must be put on hold.

The current agreement provides for a 60-day implementation period, which should allow the Israeli army to withdraw, the Wall Street Journal said, citing Lebanese officials. The Lebanese army should also be stationed in the border area with Israel to prevent Hezbollah fighters from gaining a foothold there again. An international commission should monitor compliance with the agreement with the UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL, which has been stationed in Lebanon for years, it was said.

Violent attacks in Lebanon
The Israeli army has again attacked targets in the heart of the capital Beirut and its suburbs, shortly before a possible ceasefire in Lebanon. In central Beirut, a building in the densely populated neighborhoods of Nuweiri and Ras Al Naba was bombed, eyewitnesses and security sources said.

At least seven people were killed and at least 37 others were injured, according to the Health Ministry. Reuters reporters report at least 10 simultaneous attacks on Beirut suburbs – the largest of their kind to date. An army spokesman told X that 20 areas had been affected. Clouds of smoke also rose above the center.
