At about 5:25 p.m., the 73-year-old motorist from the Liezen district was driving on a municipal road from Schladming in the direction of Lehen. On an unrestricted level crossing controlled by a lighting system, the operator may have overlooked both the light signals and the regional express from Schladming.
The driver drove onto the level crossing without stopping, the car was hit by the railcar on the left, front of the vehicle and was thrown about 30 meters onto the embankment. Due to the force of the collision, the 73-year-old woman suffered such serious injuries that she died at the scene of the accident. The car was a total loss.
After the emergency braking had been applied, the train set came to a stop about 200 meters after the accident site. There were ten passengers on the train who, like the driver, were uninjured. A breath analysis test on the driver was negative.
The trainset of the Austrian Railways and the traffic lights at the level crossing were badly damaged. The railway was closed for about an hour and a half. The relatives of the deceased were informed and cared for by a crisis intervention team.
