The gap between urban and rural areas is widening when it comes to car ownership. According to the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ), people in all state capitals except Eisenstadt had fewer cars in 2023 than in the previous year. At the same time, the number of cars in the country increased.
The residents of Vienna-Margareten had the fewest cars in Austria (260 per 1000). In Vienna there were also four other neighborhoods with fewer than 300 cars per 1000 inhabitants in 2023. Vienna is followed by Innsbruck (437 per 1000 inhabitants), Graz (470), Linz (502) and the city of Salzburg (511). The number of cars was also below average in Bregenz (540) and in the Vorarlberg districts of Dornbirn (524) and Bludenz (547). The average car engine level was 566 last year.
The Lower Austrian district of Waidhofen an der Thaya was the one with the highest number (767). People there had more cars last year than in 2022.
“Important daily destinations within walking distance”
“Today, a low level of car motorization is a sign that the population has a more diverse range of mobility options and that important everyday destinations can also be easily reached on foot or by bike, such as shops, schools, health centers or leisure facilities,” says Michael Schwendinger from VCO. Instead of being dependent on a car, the population has more ‘freedom to choose their mode of transport’.
However, in many regions things look different; here the federal and state governments are called upon to improve the provision of public mobility.
