Christian values are important to many compatriots, especially during Advent. In politics, the parties like to profile themselves as guardians of the religious tradition – it is once again about the cross in the classroom.
If Saint Martin has to make way for the ‘moon bear’ in kindergarten and crosses have to be virtually ‘invisible’ in the hospital patient rooms, this shakes the foundations of the Christian West – at least between Enns and Leitha, and for the Freedom Party.
FPÖ against banishing traditions
The Blues now respond: “We are putting our customs back in a positive light. Because our Christian roots connect us,” state party secretary Alexander Murlasits states the FPÖ line. And party manager Andreas Arthur Spanring makes it clear: “We will not allow these traditions to be increasingly banished from the public space.”
Christmas carols and the crucifix
To this end, the FPÖ is now launching two initiatives in Lower Austria: on the one hand, it has collected local Christmas carols in a booklet and, on the other hand, it wants to stipulate in the compulsory education law of Lower Austria that a cross must be hung in every school classroom.
ÖVP responds to this with sobs
The latter irritates the coalition partner. “This has not been discussed with us. “It is therefore reasonable to assume that it is just a political show,” grumbles ÖVP manager Matthias Zauner. But he hastens to assure that “this idea is already being explored anyway.”
“Don’t hide your Christian roots!”
And Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner stood up for the cross when lighting the Christmas tree in the government district, which this time comes from Altendorf in the Neunkirchen district: “The cross is and will remain in our schools, kindergartens and hospitals. Because we do not hide our Christian roots.”
However, it remained unexplained why the wooden crosses in the clinics were replaced by barely visible glass ones. . .
