Moscow police raided at least three nightclubs popular with gays on Saturday evening. They were “measures to combat LGBTQ propaganda,” it said.
Videos from the “Arma” nightclub published on online services showed visitors sitting on the dance floor and police officers walking around the hall giving orders. Another video shows people being led with their hands up from the popular Mono gay club in central Moscow, where a police vehicle was parked outside. According to the Interior Ministry, police also raided a nightclub on Skladochnaya Street, which allegedly “propagated the ideology of the banned LGBT movement.”
The manager of a travel agency was reportedly arrested. He is accused of “preparing a trip to Egypt for followers of non-traditional sexual values during the New Year holidays.” The TASS news agency reported this on Saturday, citing researchers.
Supreme Court issues LGBTQ ban
The raids came a year after Russia’s Supreme Court issued a ban on the “international LGBTQ movement” for “extremism” and banned its activities on Russian soil. The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. Extremist activities are punished with long prison sentences.
