Person in danger of life – chaos on highways: driver in psychiatric hospital

A truck driver drove in winding lines on several highways in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday. Only after a collision did he come to a stop among oncoming traffic. More than twenty people were injured, eight of them seriously. A person’s life is in danger. After his arrest, the driver was temporarily admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

According to current knowledge, a total of 50 vehicles were involved in the series of accidents caused by the truck. According to the current status of the investigation, one person has suffered life-threatening injuries. Seven other people were seriously injured and 18 were slightly injured.

Increased speed
The driver of the truck drove at a significantly higher speed and in winding lines on the A46 into the Wuppertal area and then onto the A1. There the truck collided with oncoming traffic, rammed several vehicles and eventually came to a stop on the other side of the road.

Alcohol or drug use
Officers arrested the 30-year-old driver at the scene of the accident. There were initial indications of possible alcohol or drug use at the scene. As usual, the assessment of the truck driver’s blood samples will take a long time, a police spokesperson said. An initial examination of the man also showed indications that he was mentally ill. Whether the man should remain in the psychiatric clinic must be decided in consultation with the public prosecutor and the court.

As a result of the series of accidents, several sections of the highway were temporarily closed.

Ignore stop signs
On Saturday around 4:25 p.m., the truck with a Polish license plate was reported to the police. According to the information, the highway police were able to locate the vehicle. However, the driver ignored the stop signs. “We don’t yet know what prompted him to drive like that,” said a police spokesperson.
