At the same time as a controversial demonstration in central Vienna on Saturday afternoon, in which an estimated 1,500 participants expressed their dissatisfaction with, among other things, the FPÖ’s inability to initiate government negotiations, an anti-Semitic attack took place.
The so-called shtreimel – a head covering worn by married Hasidic Jews at religious festivals (see photo below) – was torn from the head of a 66-year-old in Schrottgiessergasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. The perpetrator ran off with his loot.
Moments later, the police were able to arrest two young people, one of whom turned out to be the suspected perpetrator. The 17-year-old was cited for disorderly conduct.
No connection to pro-FPÖ demo found
By the way, after the incident, the headgear was on the shelf in a collection box for used clothing. “The officers on site did not find any connection with the demonstration that took place at the same time and/or with a political group,” police spokesman Markus Dittrich said on Sunday evening.
