Has little chance – Bolsonaro filed a complaint against the election result

Date:

Brazil’s right-wing populist head of state, Jair Bolsonaro, lost the Brazilian presidential election in October 2022. Now the 67-year-old wants to appeal the result. A corresponding request for an extraordinary review of the vote was received by the electoral authority TSE on Tuesday.

According to broadcaster CNN Brasil, the incumbent wants the results of some electronic voting machines to be invalidated. A statement from the TSE was not initially available.

The advance had little chance because it ratified the results of the elections. Left-wing politician Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva came out victorious in the vote. He is expected to take office on January 1.

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters demonstrate against Lula’s election victory
There have been repeated demonstrations in Brazil for weeks (see video above). Many of his supporters do not want to accept Lula’s election victory. Suspecting fraud due to the narrow election results, they repeatedly call for military intervention. Brazil’s navy, army and air force on Friday rejected calls to action and committed to democracy.

The left-wing Lula narrowly won the presidential election over Bolsonaro in October. Lula received 50.9 percent of the vote in the second round, Bolsonaro received 49.1 percent. It is the closest presidential election result in Brazil’s recent history. In early November, the outgoing president had promised to provide “all information and support necessary for a smooth transition”. He also said he wanted to “respect the constitution”.
