The Israeli army has declared another hostage dead in the Islamist Hamas violence in the Gaza Strip.
The tank commander, born in New York and 21 years old at the time of his abduction, was killed in the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. His body has since been held in the Gaza Strip.
The forum of hostage families said the soldier was kidnapped in 2023 along with other comrades.
Members of Hamas and other extremist groups killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250 others in Israel on October 7 last year. After more than a year of war, many of the hundred or so remaining hostages are expected to be no longer alive.
Among them, several have German or American citizenship in addition to Israelis. Austrian-Israeli dual national Tal Shoham is also being held in the Gaza Strip.
Papal call for peace
Pope Francis made an urgent appeal for peace during the Angelus prayer on the first Sunday of Advent. The Pope urgently called for a ceasefire in Gaza. He called for the release of the hostages and for the Palestinian population to have access to humanitarian aid. He welcomed the ceasefire in Lebanon and also expressed his solidarity with Ukraine.
