Not only line-up hot – Wiener Donauinselfest starts grand final

Date:

It literally gets hot on the third and final day of the Vienna Danube Island Festival 2022. And not just because of the high summer temperatures, because the lineup of Europe’s largest open-air festival with free entry will make many an island guest sweat. As a big headliner, Jan Delay and his Kombo Disko No. 1 are on the starting blocks, before it is mainly representatives of the German rap genre that come and go. In addition, several Eurovision winners Johnny Logan, Ernst Molden and Mavi Phoenix provide a great atmosphere.

The Vienna Danube Island Festival goes to the final on Sunday. Without corona restrictions, the “new” FM4 stage is now experiencing its baptism of fire. Until now, this was on the north side of the party mile, idyllically located in a natural arena between the Floridsdorfer Bridge and the North Bridge. But this stage is now a thing of the past: the large, central festival stage functions as an FM4 stage on Sunday – although that was already the case last year at the ‘slimmed’ festival.

Jan Delay, Mavi Phoenix and Johnny Logan rock the stages
A lively crowd can also be expected on the last open-air day: in the evening headliner Jan Delay – accompanied by his live combo Disko No. 1 – guest there. Therefore, the focus is on local artists. The Viennese rapper Verified, the trio Sharktank and the singers Eli Preiss and Mavi Phoenix are expected. Well-known acts can also be found on other island areas. This is how Johnny Logan enters the Schlager stage. Ernst Molden and Ursula Strauss, among others, will perform in the Ö1 culture tent.

Visitors to the island can look forward to fantastic weather – downpours and thunderstorms are not on the schedule. Many use the banks of the New Danube for swimming and relaxing before the evening musical program. There is still moderate crowds on the festival site, but there are many families with children on the site.

The past two days have already provided an island festival feeling in the usual way. The crowds were large – and visitors were spared the thunderstorms that were feared for Saturday evening. The main acts so far are Nico Santos, Umberto Tozzi, Mathea, Stefanie Werger and Peter Cornelius.

Few police operations so far
Events on the Danube Island itself have so far been largely peaceful. There were hardly any incidents, the Vienna police reported on Sunday afternoon. Two Syrians (aged 27 and 34) who allegedly sexually harassed women were also identified using a drone. They made no confession and were generally reported.
