The U2 metro line has been running again over the entire route since Friday morning. The three-year partial closure between the Schottentor and Karlsplatz stations has been lifted. The new sliding platform doors have also been installed on parts of the route that have been closed for a long time (see above).
The U2 line is now running again on the section between Schottentor and Karlsplatz, where operations have been suspended since 2021. The reason for the closure for many years was work on the future U2/U5 line junction.
Platform doors for the first time in Vienna
Sliding doors, among other things, were installed on the platform on the last closed part of the route, which previously did not exist in the Vienna metro network. They will later enable the fully automatic operation of the self-driving U5.
Delays due to technical problems
Originally, work on this route would have resumed more than a year ago. However, technical problems led to delays.
The U2 will continue to drive to Karlsplatz until at least 2030. The route then branches off at the intersection with the town hall and joins the completely newly constructed route towards Matzleinsdorfer Platz.
