The National Assembly must vote on the impeachment motion by this Saturday.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol appears closer to discharge this Saturday by parliament after losing the support of the leader of the ruling party.
Yoon, who has not appeared in public to announce the case since his television intervention early Wednesday lifting of the state of emergencyhas met with Han Dong-hoon, the head of his party, the conservative People’s Power Party (PPP).
It was expected that clues would emerge from this meeting about a possible resignation of Yoon or a clear statement from Han that would mark the PPP line, but nothing has emerged about Yoon’s position. The latest statements from the head of his party seem to pave the way for the impeachment motion that the National Assembly must vote no later than this Saturday.
“In light of the recently revealed facts, I believe it is necessary to immediately suspend President Yoon Suk-yeol from his duties to protect the Republic of Korea and its people,” Han said at an emergency meeting of his party.
Han has indicated that he has been able to confirm “with reliable evidence” that Yoon ordered the arrest of him, the leader of his own party, or Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the main opposition party. And he has assured that these “radical actions”, which put the country “in grave danger”, could be repeated if the president remains in power.
The PPP has called an emergency meeting of all its parliamentarians, during which it is expected to discuss the vote to be cast tomorrow during the parliamentary session scheduled to approve or reject Yoon’s resignation.
