Russian Patriarch Cyril I, who recently became known for his support for the war of aggression against Ukraine, caused a shock during a service. Immediately after spraying holy water, he slipped on the slippery floor. Critics now see the accident as a “divine sign”.
The minor accident of the 75-year-old head of the Russian Orthodox Church was broadcast live on television. Videos of the fall quickly made the rounds on social media.
“Thanks to God’s grace” without consequences
He slipped on the holy water-soaked floor, he told Russia’s Ria Novosti news service. “The laws of physics” led to the fall, which, however, “by the grace of God had no consequences”. “The floor is beautiful, you can see yourself reflected in it, it’s so glittering and smooth,” he continued, explaining that he had “slid” unhappily.
Kyrill was able to continue Mass shortly after the accident.
“Sin of praying for genocide”
However, his critics see different backgrounds to the incident. For example, the opposition’s Telegram channel, Solovjiny Pomjot, noted: “The Lord has given Russia a sign that it is a sin to pray for genocide.” Numerous social network users responded with similar glee.
Kyrill is considered one of the main supporters of President Vladimir Putin’s war course against Ukraine – shortly after the start of the war, he blessed the Russian missiles and Putin’s army.
