Russia bombs Kiev again on eve of NATO summit

Date:

The airstrike, which left one dead and six injured, hit a residential building and a daycare center in the capital.

It had been a while since Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, had been bombed, but early Sunday morning, hours before the start of the G7 summit at Elmau Castle in Bavaria, the Russian army fired several rockets at the capital. country. According to the mayor of the city, Vitali Klichkó, the projectiles hit a multi-storey apartment building in the Shevchenkovsky district and a kindergarten.

The attack left at least one dead and six injured, four of whom were hospitalized, although the number of casualties could be higher as the affected area has not yet been evacuated. The impact caused a strong fire. Among the four hospitalized is a seven-year-old girl and her mother. The father is the only deceased recorded so far. That same neighborhood was bombed last March and then at the end of April, along with the visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry released a statement claiming that the attack targeted the Artiom military factory and that the information about the fall of Russian missiles in the Shevchenkovsky district is “false”. According to his version of what happened, it was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile that destroyed several floors of the building where the victims were located. The Russian military department recalls that the same Artiom plant was attacked as early as April.

Mayor Klichkó, who went to the scene of the incident, said the aim of the attack “is to intimidate before the NATO summit”. “Our military is doing everything possible to prevent attacks on our city, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee 100 percent security, neither in Kiev nor in other parts of Ukraine as long as the Russian aggression continues,” he said.

For his part, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba urged that “the G7 summit should respond with more sanctions against Russia and more heavy weapons for Ukraine”. In his words, it is necessary to “defeat the morbid imperialism of Moscow”. The bombing this Sunday also spread to the city of Kharkiv, the country’s second largest, and the Cherkass region, where one death was recorded from the attacks.

Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu paid a visit to Russian troops fighting in Ukraine for the first time in recent hours. He moved to the area of Donbás, but the exact place where he was was not revealed. Russian forces have just succeeded in taking the city of Severodonetsk and are now trying to encircle the Ukrainian army in the neighboring city of Lisichansk from the south.

Russian media noted that Shoigu’s trip to the occupied part of Ukraine is for inspection only. However, the minister took the opportunity to hand out medals to the Russian soldiers who showed the most courage during the battle, although he urged them not to be on their guard. And it is that, in his words, there are still “many glorious deeds ahead”, implying that the battle will be a long one.
