The Dominican Republic committed the largest cocaine seizure in its history on Friday. About 9.5 tons of cocaine were found hidden in a shipment of bananas in the port of the capital Santo Domingo.
“Initial investigations show that the container of bananas came from Guatemala,” said Carlos Denvers of the National Drug Control Agency.

“Several unknown people attempted to load the drugs into another container, which would then be shipped to a cargo ship to Belgium.” Authorities discovered a total of 320 bags containing approximately 9,528 kilos of cocaine. The value of the medicines: 250 million dollars (236.27 million euros).
A foundation that analyzes organized crime warns that record-breaking seizures this year indicate the Caribbean is once again becoming a major trade route from Colombia to Europe. Consumption there is estimated to have more than doubled between 2011 and last year.
