Vorarlberg is the “land of volunteer work”. In his series of the same name, author Robert Schneider highlights people who are committed to helping others. This time he met Maria Thurnher, who distributes everyday items to people in need.
She doesn’t have much time, says Maria Thurnher. She still has to go to her weekly Jass round. That’s why I try to get straight to the point with my questions. We have barely greeted each other when she starts the private tour of “her warehouse” at Bildgasse 10 in Dornbirn, better known as the “KIKA external warehouse”, where clothes, household items, bedding, blankets, toys, shoes and so on that she and its approximately 45 volunteers distribute weekly to needy people and families in Vorarlberg. There are even tissues on a shelf. When I asked if there was still a demand for cloth handkerchiefs, she replied in the broad Dornbirn dialect: “Nümma a lot.” Nowadays, households are also arranged differently depending on cultural circumstances. “Muslims don’t need wine glasses or beer mugs.”
