Following the eruption of a Kanlaon volcano in the Philippines, authorities on Monday began evacuating villages within six kilometers of the crater.
“An explosive eruption occurred at Kanlaon Volcano,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said on Monday. A total of fifteen villages must be evacuated. Evacuations are already underway in four villages in the highlands. Meanwhile, the volcano’s activity seemed to decrease again.
Hundreds of residents were moved to safety in September after the volcano emitted thousands of tons of harmful gases within a day.
Two dozen active volcanoes
The Kanlaon volcano is located on the island of Negros in the central Philippines. It is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. According to the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the ash cloud rose about 4,000 meters above the volcanic crater.
The volcano’s activity means that “magma eruption has begun, which could be followed by further eruptions,” officials said. According to the seismological authority, Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1866.
