Driving down the secured ski slopes turned fatal on Tuesday for a group from the Czech Republic in the Tyrolean Zillertal. Two of the five men were caught and swept away by an avalanche. Only one of them was lucky in adversity.
The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. The five-member male group from the Czech Republic (35, 40, 44, 47 and 51 years old), consisting of two freeride guides and three participants, was traveling in the Hochfügen ski area. “The group wanted to ski in open terrain of the northeastern slope below the Waidoffen mountain station,” police said.
The five men rode up the slope one after the other. “The 51-year-old guide came in third and fell for an unknown reason.”
Take an ambulance to the hospital
As a result, the 47-year-old participant drove over to help the 51-year-old. “On the way there, a patch of snow came loose and took both men with it,” investigators said. The 47-year-old fell unharmed in the avalanche.
Meanwhile, the 51-year-old was partially buried. His companions were able to dig him out quickly. The guide suffered serious injuries and was flown to Schwaz Hospital by emergency helicopter.
“The avalanche was approximately 50 meters wide and approximately 100 meters long,” the report concluded.
