Avalanche alarm early Wednesday afternoon on the Stubai Glacier in Tyrol: a winter sports enthusiast was hit by masses of snow outside the secured slopes and partially buried. According to information from “Krone”, the person was probably injured.
Shortly after 12:30 an alarm message went out from the Tyrol control center. The avalanche occurred on the Stubai Glacier – in the Daunjoch area. As the control center explained to the “Krone”, one person was hit by an avalanche and injured.
Partially buried, self-liberated
The winter sports enthusiast was partially buried and was able to free himself. The emergency medical helicopter “Martin 8” was in action. Just like the Alpine police and the Stubai Glacier snow rescue service.
Further information about the accident or the identity of the affected winter sports enthusiast is not yet available.
Seriously injured in avalanche in the Zillertal
An avalanche alarm had already been issued in Tyrol on Tuesday – in the Zillertal. A Czech freeride guide was hit by a snow slab and partially buried. Companions were able to dig the man out within minutes. The 51-year-old suffered serious injuries.
Currently avalanche warning level two in Tyrol
In large parts of Tyrol, avalanche warning level two (out of five) is currently in effect in areas above 2200 meters altitude. “In recent days, snowdrifts have formed at high altitudes and in the high mountains. The fresh and older wind slabs are partially sensitive to triggering, especially in the northwest to northeast exposure above about 7,000 feet. Some of them are covered with snow and therefore difficult to see,” say the experts from the Tyrolean Avalanche Warning Service.
Extra caution applies especially in ridges, gullies and hollows. Dangerous areas are more common in the high mountains.
