A high called “Ernst” brings us calm winter weather with icy temperatures in the lowlands at the start of the second half of the week. But according to weather experts from UBIMET, a low-pressure area will take over from Sunday. There is a slight increase in temperatures at the beginning of the week.
High ‘Ernst’ is currently leading cold air towards Austria and will spread to the Alpine region from Thursday. However, cold, moist air persists in the lowlands. The influence of low pressure will increase over the weekend, and mild Atlantic air will cause a slight increase in temperatures next week, according to UBIMET meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann.
Sun and high fog on Thursday
Most of the sun will shine on Thursday after the fog in the Alps has lifted. In the Danube region and the southeast, the high fog will temporarily lift, while it will remain cloudy in the northeast and in some valleys. The temperatures are between -2 and +4 degrees.
On Friday the bright sun dominates the mountains. However, thick, high fog persists in the lowlands, with freezing fog in places. In the Mühlviertel and Danube areas the fresh easterly wind provides some sunshine, but also briefly in the east. Temperatures reach -2 to +2 degrees, at an altitude of 1500 m in the west up to +5 degrees.
Weekend mostly cloudy
There will be high fog in the lowlands on Saturday, with short breaks possible in the east. In the evening there will be light rain in the west and the snow line will rise to 700 meters. Temperatures: -1 to +5 degrees.
On Sunday it will remain cloudy and wet on the north side of the Alps and in the east, with a snowfall line of 400 to 600 meters. In the south it occasionally becomes a bit looser. Strong northwest wind, temperatures from 0 to +7 degrees.
Again up to 10 degrees possible
The low pressure influence will continue on Monday, with rain on the north side of the Alps and snow at higher altitudes. From Tuesday, maximum temperatures will calm the weather as mild air moves in from the west. Temperatures will rise as the week progresses, with up to 10 degrees possible on the eastern edge of the Alps.
