Pathological love for animals – “I can’t tell you how many dogs I have!”

Date:

The case surrounding a well-known, sick animal collector from Eisenstadt leaves animal lovers baffled. Because a judge rejected a requested ban on keeping animals two years ago – as we reported. The authority has now initiated a new procedure. It remains to be seen whether the lady can continue like this again.

Sarah R. from Burgenland had been looking for a suitable second dog for a long time and asked around among her friends. Because she wanted to give an animal welfare dog a second chance and have him move in with her before Christmas.

“I received the tip to contact Martina B. in Eisenstadt, who wanted to pass on a dog. We made an appointment at her house and I still wondered why she took me straight to the basement,” recalls Sarah R.

Cats without daylight
She will not soon forget what she saw there. Animals were kept in a very small space in the dark, garbage-filled basement! Three Chihuahuas were even tightly packed in a small shipping box. “They have certainly been there for a long time,” says Sarah R. in an interview with “Krone” Tierecke.

Way too many animals
The animal lover, who originally only wanted to take one dog, reflexively reached for the box and took the three four-legged friends with him. Loud barking was heard outside the apartment door and there was a terrible stench. When asked how many animals she actually had, Mrs. B. (name withheld) simply replied: “I can’t tell you how many dogs I have!” and she prevented the questioner from looking into the apartment.

“I think she already realized it was too much. Otherwise she wouldn’t have made an appointment with me to pass it on. But it was clear to me that there were animals in distress and that there was danger,” said Sarah R., who immediately notified the police.

Officially approved
The official veterinarian who was called in seized approximately 80 cats and dogs. According to animal rights activists, most of the poor four-legged friends were also found in the attic and basement of the house. The small apartment itself would have been full of animals.

Animals are the ones who suffer
The four-legged friends have now been housed in an animal shelter in the countryside and are being cared for there. Whether they can be passed on to animal lovers has not yet been decided and is the responsibility of the Eisenstadt magistrate.

The clinical psychologist prof.dr. Birgit Stetina, head of the department of human-animal relations at the Sigmund Freud Private University, is concerned with the mechanisms behind such cases of pathological animal collection.

Excessive love for animals
The specialist knows that those affected only care about animal welfare and their great love for animals according to their own insight: “They believe that they can best care for the animal and gain great self-affirmation in their supposed love for animals. animals.”

These people have a different reality and ignore problems or critical voices. “More and more ‘protégés’ are being collected, but in the longer term this leads to excessive demands. The result is neglect of the animals and also of yourself,” said the expert.

She also knows that healing on her own is not possible; professional treatment and therapy are necessary.
