At least nine people have been killed in severe storms in eastern Australia. In Queensland, tens of thousands of households lost power because high-voltage pylons fell. Severe storms and floods also claimed several lives in Thailand.
According to Australian police, the bodies of three men whose boat capsized off the coast of Brisbane the day before have been recovered. A total of eleven men had gone on a fishing trip when their boat was struck by the storm. The remaining eight fishermen were rescued. The victims included a nine-year-old girl who had been swept away by floodwaters in a Brisbane suburb the day before and ended up in a sewer.
Flash flooding left three women trapped in a storm drain in the Queensland town of Gympie on Tuesday. A 40-year-old woman was killed, one woman survived and the third woman is still missing.
Warning for “huge” hailstones
In Queensland, tens of thousands of households lost power because high-voltage pylons fell. The Australian Weather Service continued to warn of “dangerous” storms, “life-threatening” flooding, “massive” hailstones and “destructive” winds in Queensland.
Particularly affected by climate change
While eastern Australia is hit by heavy storms, the west of the continent is struggling with drought and bushfires. Australia in particular is affected by climate change. A report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change from February 2022 assumes that the country will be hit more often by devastating natural disasters in the future.
Floods in Thailand
Floods also occurred in southern Thailand, killing at least six people. The six fatalities in Narathiwat province included an 89-year-old and a small child, deputy provincial governor Preecha Nualnoi said on Wednesday. One person is still missing.
Tens of thousands of households without electricity
According to regional authorities, more than 70,000 households in the provinces of Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat have been affected by the flooding that started last Friday.
The water is up to three meters high
Days of heavy rain caused floods that were as high as three meters in some places. Local media showed images of flooded streets and residents taking refuge on rooftops. Emergency crews worked overnight, handing out bottled water and snacks and searching buildings for damage or casualties.
