Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues his North American tour. The 45-year-old landed in Canada on Friday. The Ukrainian presidential couple was received at Ottawa airport by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In addition to a meeting with the head of government, meetings with representatives of Canadian business are also planned.
Trudeau’s office said the reception of the guest from Kiev was intended to reaffirm Ukraine’s continued support in the defensive war against neighboring Russia. According to its own statements, Canada has provided Ukraine with more than 8.9 billion Canadian dollars (about 6.2 billion euros) since the start of the Russian war of aggression, of which about a fifth consists of military aid. Leopard 2 tanks, among others, were delivered.
“Support without ifs and buts”
“Canada continues to support the people of Ukraine unconditionally in their struggle for their sovereignty and democracy, as well as our shared values of respect for the rule of law, freedom and self-determination,” Trudeau said. He looks forward to welcoming Zelenskyj to Canada.
Before his trip to Canada, Zelenskyj took part in the general UN debate in New York this week and was subsequently received by US President Joe Biden at the White House. He also met with several Cabinet members, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, as well as members of Congress in the capital, Washington.
At the White House, Zelensky received a promise that the first American M1 Abrams battle tanks would arrive in Ukraine next week.
